Chandra Observations of Diffuse X-Rays from the Sagittarius B2 Cloud
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present the first Chandra results of the giant molecular cloud Sagittarius B2 (Sgr B2), located about 100 pc away from the Galactic center. Diffuse X-rays are clearly separated from one-and-a-half dozen resolved point sources. The X-ray spectrum exhibits pronounced iron Kshell transition lines at 6.40 keV (Kα) and 7.06 keV (Kβ), deep iron K-edge at 7.11 keV and large photo-electric absorption at low energy. The absorption-corrected X-ray luminosity is ∼ 1×10 erg s, two orders of magnitude larger than the integrated luminosity of all the resolved point sources. The diffuse X-rays come mainly from the south-west half of the cloud with a concave-shape pointing to the Galactic center direction. These results strongly support the ASCA model that Sgr B2 is irradiated by an X-ray source at the Galactic center side. Time Variability of the Neutral Iron Lines from the Sagittarius B2 Region and Its Implication of a Past Outburst of Sagittarius A
We investigated long-term X-ray behavior from the Sgr B2 complex using archival data of the X-ray satellites Suzaku, XMM-Newton, Chandra, and ASCA. The observed region of the Sgr B2 complex included two prominent spots in the Fe I K ̨ line at 6.40 keV, a giant molecular cloud, M 0.66 0.02, known as the “Sgr B2 cloud” and an unusual X-ray source, G0.570 0.018. Although these 6.40 keV spots have s...
متن کاملX-Ray Observations on the Galactic Center Region
This paper reports on the early Chandra view of the Galactic center (GC) activities. The massive black hole Sgr A is extremely faint, while more bright diffuse X-ray emission is prevailing in the circumnuclear disk. Another high temperature plasma is found in the Sgr A East shell. This may indicate that Sgr A East is a supernova remnant, although no clear X-ray shell is found. A hint of non-the...
متن کاملChandra Observations of Embedded Young Stellar Objects
This paper reviews the results of the Chandra deep exposure observations on star forming regions. The ρ Ophiuchi (ρ Oph) cloud cores B-F reveal ∼ 100 X-ray sources above the detection limit of ∼10 ergs s. About 2/3 of the X-ray sources are identified with an optical and/or infrared (IR) object, including significant numbers of class I sources. The class I sources exhibit higher temperature plas...
متن کاملCharacteristics of Diffuse X-ray Line Emission within 20 Pc of the Galactic Center
Over the last three years, the Galactic center region has been monitored with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. Besides the X-ray emission from the target object, Sgr A*, diffuse X-ray emission was detected throughout most of the 17 × 17 field of view. With 11 Chandra observations through 2002 June, the total effective exposure reaches ∼590 ks, providing significant photon statistics on much of th...

We present a clear detection of CH 2 in absorption towards the molecular cloud complexes Sagittarius B2 and W49 N using the ISO Long Wavelength Spectrometer. These observations represent the first detection of its low excitation rotational lines in the interstellar medium. Towards Sagittarius B2, we detect both ortho and para transitions allowing a determination of the total CH 2 column density...
